What a move by Major League Baseball. This past weekend, they made the decision to take the 2021 All-Star Game out of Atlanta, Georgia.
I don't agree with a lot of things Commissioner Rob Manfred does, but I do applaud his decision on this.
For those who don't know, the decision to strip Atlanta of this year's ASG was due to Georgia's new voting laws which many experts agreed would make it harder for some people to vote.
Some new rules and restrictions include: Voters will now have less time to request absentee ballots; there are strict new ID requirements for absentee ballots; offering food or water to voters waiting in line now can get you a misdemeanor charges.
MLB released a statement saying “Major League Baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and opposes restrictions to the ballot box,” said Manfred. “We proudly used our platform to encourage baseball fans and communities throughout our country to perform their civic duty and actively participate in the voting process. Fair access to voting continues to have our game’s unwavering support.”
Many people voiced their approval over the news, like Magic Johnson and LeBron James.
Not everyone is supportive of MLB's decision and the hashtag #BoycottMLB began trending on Friday.
America's National Pastime has been divided due to politics. This makes me wonder and, "Can't we all just get along?" Apparently not. Again, I think what MLB is doing is right for baseball and for sports. We've seen instances of social justice movement in the NBA and NFL and for MLB to take a stance despite the criticism and fallout this may bring shows that they care about this issue.
It's extremely unfortunate that Atlanta will not be able to host an All-Star Game this year and perhaps for the unforeseeable future. I do understand this is a significant amount of revenue the city/state would be getting and many people are losing out on jobs that would have been provided during ASG weekend.
It's extremely disappointing to see that the late great Hank Aaron will not be honored in Atlanta, the place where he shattered Babe Ruth's home run record, but I think a move like this by MLB honors his memory and legacy when it comes to his career and his fight for civic rights.
It was announced on Monday the All-Star Game will be moved to Coors Field. This is definitely an interesting and exciting move. I'm sure a lot of people will have strong reactions to this, there will always be supporters and adversaries on anything and everything.
We've seen in the past that baseball has the power to bring people together. For example, the baseball games that occurred after 9/11; David Ortiz's speech after the Boston Marathon Bombings, and even when the death of Osama Bin Laden was announced on national television during the Mets-Phillies game nearly six years ago, we saw fans united as one.
But in this day and age, where social issues are growing and cancel culture continues to rise, something as American as baseball can cause this country to be divided even more so.
SIDE NOTE: I AM HYPED THAT ALL-STAR GAME GOT MOVED TO COLORADO! Just imagine the offense both teams will display at Coors Field. Not to mention the Home Run Derby will be an amazing exhibition, so I am definitely looking forward to it!

Coors Field will replace Truist Park as the venue for the 2021 M.L.B. All-Star Game.
